Emma Raducanu has faced criticism online for dismissing Andy Murray’s retirement from tennis as “old news.”
The 21-year-old is returning to the US Open for the first time since 2022, aiming for a strong performance in the final major of the year. This is also the first Grand Slam since Murray retired, following an emotional farewell at Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Raducanu had been scheduled to play alongside Murray at Wimbledon, but she withdrew from their match, depriving the 37-year-old of one last opportunity to compete at his home tournament.
Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, was a highly respected figure in the tennis world. However, Raducanu’s lack of sympathy was evident when she responded bluntly to a question about life on tour without Murray as she prepared for the US Open.
When asked if things felt different without Murray, Raducanu said, “No, it doesn’t feel different at all. Tennis is unforgiving in that sense, no matter who you are, it just moves on. There’s always another tournament. Of course, Andy’s achieved amazing things and I watched him win this tournament, but it’s fast-paced like life is. It’s old news the next day.”
Her remarks sparked controversy online, with fans expressing displeasure at how she seemingly downplayed Murray’s retirement.
