Zeeshan Ali resigns as Davis Cup coach, ending 11 year tenure at the helm of Indian tennis team

India’s next Davis Cup assignment is an away tie against Sweden in Stockholm next month. AITA is yet to announce Zeeshan’s replacement.

On Wednesday, Zeeshan Ali made his resignation known as the Indian Davis Cup tennis team’s coach.

Zeeshan, who took over for Nandan Bal as India’s Davis Cup coach in 2013, said to PTI, “I’ve been coach of the Davis Cup team for 11 years now.”

“To crown it all, I captained the Davis Cup team during our historic match against Pakistan earlier this year in Pakistan. The 54-year-old Zeeshan stated, “I don’t think there is any such person from any country who has had the privilege and honor of doing all these three things.”

Following their 4-0 rout of Pakistan in the play-offs held in Islamabad in February, India was promoted to World Group I.

India’s next World Group I away match is against Sweden in Stockholm on September 14–15 for the Davis Cup. The successor for Zeeshan Ali has not yet been announced by the All India Tennis Association (AITA).

Zeeshan Ali, who competed for India in the Olympics in Seoul in 1988, declared that he will now concentrate on the National Tennis Center’s (NTC) development.

“NTC is my only concern. You will hear more about that in the upcoming weeks, along with the AITA’s plans for the NTC, according to Zeeshan Ali.

The NTC is an academy in New Delhi that aims to raise the standard of tennis in India at the local level.

In order to ensure that the program operates effectively and begins to generate the next generation of champions, he continued, “that will require a lot more of my time and focus.” This is where his current focus and energy will be directed.

At the age of 18, Zeeshan Ali, a former junior world No. 2 player, was ranked 126th on the ATP Tour. At the age of sixteen, he advanced to the Wimbledon Juniors singles semifinals and won fourteen ITF junior events. But at the age of 25, a back injury put an end to his playing career; ever since, he has been a coach.
