Emma Raducanu has one last chance to avoid a worrying US Open problem
Before the US Open, Emma Raducanu has one more chance to earn some experience in matches, but there is little indication that she is prepared to take it.
Raducanu chose not to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris this month in order to focus on earning ranking points in the WTA Tour tournament in Washington. Her choice paid off as she advanced to the quarterfinals and saw her ranking rise once more.
Her inability to secure wildcards for the WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, however, has severely limited her ability to practice matches before the US Open, which has severely impacted her ambitions of building on her positive run in Washington.
Raducanu’s choice to sit out the Toronto qualifying round despite being on the original Canadian qualifying list has some of the blame for this.
In addition, she is not participating in this week’s Cincinnati tournament, which features previous Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, as she was unable to secure a wildcard or even go into qualifying.
Raducanu has already chosen not to participate in qualifying, having declined to do so for the French Open in May of last year and failing to receive a wildcard into the Roland Garros main draw.
She later acknowledged that she had opted to skip the French Open in order to practice on grass courts more. This decision paid off handsomely, as she shot from well outside the top 200 to comfortably back in the top 100 following runs to the Nottingham Open semifinals, Eastbourne International quarterfinals, and Wimbledon fourth round.
