LSU Football Lands Commitment From No. 3 Wide Receiver in Louisiana

Phillip Wright, a former Michigan commitment, has pledged to play for Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers. The class of 2025 becomes more powerful.
Three-star wide receiver Phillip Wright of Destrehan, Louisiana, announced on social media on Friday afternoon that he has committed to Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers.

Less than a week after abandoning his pledge to the Michigan Wolverines, Kelly and company were soon favored to sign the Bayou State star.

One of America’s best receivers will now play for the purple and gold from home, having taken a few days to consider his options.

The “Who’s Who” of college football are making offers to Wright, the No. 3 wide receiver in Louisiana, making him a sought-after target in the recruiting process.

Even though he had committed to Michigan in July, LSU’s intense pressure forced him to change his mind.

On the last weekend of July, LSU hosted its annual Bayou Splash recruiting event, giving Wright another chance to travel to Baton Rouge for an unofficial visit.

Wright had the opportunity to take in the sights of Death Valley once more on this tour, this time with the Tigers encircling him with their best prospects and commitments for the 2025 cycle.

He decided to reopen recruitment and withdraw his promise shortly after.

At 5 feet 11 inches and 170 pounds, the speedster is now on his way to play for Kelly and the Tigers, where he will sign a contract in December during the Early Signing Period.

With five-star receiver Derek Meadows, the No. 1 wide receiver in Louisiana, TaRon “ManChild” Francis, and Wright in the mix, LSU now has commitments from three highly sought-after players.

With three commitments in his belt already and his sights set on others, position coach Cortez Hankton has stepped up his game in the 2025 cycle.

Wright’s pledge places him in the No. 3 Recruiting Class in America, which is currently climbing the rankings and very nearly reaching the No. 1 spot.

Kelly and the Tigers are vying for a number of elite targets that are still available in this cycle, including five-star safety Jonah Williams (ranked #1) and wide receiver Jamie Ffrench (ranked fifth).

In the past 24 hours, LSU has already secured commitments from two highly sought-after 2025 prospects: Wright and Tennessee-native CJ Jimcoily.

CJ Jimcoily: Safety Grade of 4

Safety CJ Jimcoily of Nashville, Tennessee’s Lipscomb Academy, committed to LSU on Thursday afternoon after the team’s star defensive back made his decision public. Brian Kelly and the LSU coaching staff secured the pledge.

The Tigers defeated Stanford, Tennessee, and Alabama in the 2025 cycle, as the four-star prospect narrowed his selection to four finalists a few weeks prior.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound player is now signed by the Bayou Bengals, and he instantly becomes an important component of the defensive backfield going forward.

Jimcoily may be used in a variety of ways for defensive coordinator Blake Baker. He is the second safety in the 2025 class, behind Destrehan (La.) star Jhase Thomas.

The team salivates at the enormous potential he achieves as he grows to enormous size and may be utilized in the new STAR role as a hybrid safety/linebacker.

When it came down to relationships with the LSU staff, namely safety coach Jake Olsen, Jimcoily had the Stanford Cardinal near the top of his list.

Jimcoily is a player who excels in the classroom and has a GPA above 4.0. Stanford was interested in him, but LSU offered him a strategy that allowed him to succeed on and off the field.

This summer, Jimcoily made quite a few trips to LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, and Stanford, all of which were highly visible.

There were enough factors in the case of LSU for the program to prevail. Jimcoily’s father still has family in Louisiana, but he was raised in the New Orleans region. It turned into a significant advantage for the Bayou Bengals program in the final stretch.

Last month, the July Recruiting Dead Period was in effect, which allowed the highly sought-after safety time to consider his options before making an announcement.

Currently, Wright and Jimcoily, who were committed as the 20th and 21st picks, respectively, contribute to LSU’s third-best recruiting class overall.
