REPORT: ‘Dynamic’ wide receiver decommits from Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class
It seems that Michigan football has lost a 2025 recruiting class pledge, following a very successful summer for the program in terms of recruiting.
The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb of 247Sports said on Sunday night that three-star wide receiver Philip Wright of Destrehan, Louisiana, is no longer a member of Michigan’s class. According to Webb, Wright’s decision to play college football closer to home is motivated by a desire to do so. LSU is expected to be Wright’s final destination.
Wright turned down offers from LSU and Georgia, among other schools, when he first committed to Michigan on July 13. But the Tigers had other wide receiver prospects in the 2025 class in mind at the moment. LSU stepped up their efforts with Wright when those prospects committed elsewhere, and it seems like Brian Kelly and the Tigers were able to pull off a flip. During the weekend of July 24, LSU invited Wright for the program’s annual “Bayou Splash” recruiting event.
Wright is ranked as the No. 430 overall prospect, No. 68 wide receiver, and No. 12 player from Louisiana in the 2025 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. “A big-play receiver who can stretch the field vertically” is how 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brown characterizes the 5-foot-11, 175-pound player. A “dynamic run-after-catch threat” and a “certified burner” are further descriptions of him.
With Wright’s alleged departure, Michigan’s only committed wide receiver for the 2025 cycle is Jacob Washington, a four-star prospect from Marrero, Louisiana and Archbishop Shaw. But under wide receiver coach Ron Bellamy, the Wolverines are well-positioned to bring in another four-star recruit at the end of the month. In the ‘Top 5′ that also includes Texas, Oklahoma, USC, and Washington, Michigan is now the frontrunner to win wide receiver Andrew Marsh’s pledge from Fulshear, Texas, who has set a commitment date of August 28.
As of the time of publication, Wright had not publicly announced his intention to transfer from Michigan to LSU. If that occurs, Bellamy and the Wolverines might try to re-sign the native of Louisiana for the 2025 class, although it might be difficult given the Tigers’ home state.
