Many Italian fans have insulted the Australian Open 2024 champion, who also missed the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. The young Italian was expecting better results at the French Open and Wimbledon, but a health concern has slowed him down in the last month and a half.
Jannik was infected with a virus the day before his match against Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships, a problem that has debilitated him and not allowed him to express himself at his best against the Russian on the historic Centre Court.
Sinner will have to defend a lot of points in the second part of the season and aim to get 100% to the most significant events. In Montreal, the Italian will have to defend the 1000 points he scored last year in Toronto, when he won the first Masters 1000 of his young career.
The Italians will be the big favorite in Canada, having the possibility to train more than the players who are playing the Paris Olympics. ATP legend Novak Djokovic has already confirmed that he will skip the Montreal Masters 1000 and also the appearance of Carlos Alcaraz is at significant risk. The Spaniard is playing singles and doubles in Paris and has confessed to having a slight problem with his thigh.
Bassetti defends Sinner
Several fans have accused Jannik Sinner of voluntarily skipping the Paris Olympics to focus on the American events. For some individuals, tonsillitis is nearly nothing but the reality is much different. The director of infectious diseases at the Hospital of Genoa, Matteo Bassetti, commented on the physical situation of the Italian ace and explained: “Tonsillitis is an acute sickness that then resolves. It lasts around 10 days and with the therapy, it heals. It is normal that Sinner has already improved and begun training again”.
The doctor then stated why it was absolutely not suggested to go on the field and why Sinner had to declare the package: “Playing with tonsillitis in progress would not be simple at all, it gets difficult even to breathe, not to mention the temperature. Of course, I’m not his doctor but I am confident that tonsillitis was absolutely no justification for not participating in the Olympic Games in Paris”.
Now Sinner is working and the goal is to enhance the condition in view of Montreal, event where he defends the championship and therefore also defends the leadership in the ATP ranking. The 22-year-old Italian has done some remarkable things this year, winning four titles and capturing his first Grand Slam trophy in Melbourne earlier this year.
Jannik has already arrived in Canada
Sinner has consistently proved to be the biggest rival of Carlos Alcaraz, with whom he played numerous memorable battles. The Spaniard ace has professed his love for the Italian numerous times: “Being there with Jannik at 22 and 21 at the top of the rankings and winning Grand Slams is good for tennis to have new faces winning big things and competing in major tournaments. I am quite delighted to have him there. We have a tremendous rivalry as new players develop in the fight for these things. It’s excellent for the sport, for tennis, and for the players as well.”
Despite their early age, Sinner and Alcaraz immediately proved that they were far ahead of the other players of their time. During a recent interview with L’Equipe, former ATP ace Marc Rosset paid tribute to Jannik and Carlitos: “Afterwards, behind Sinner, I find that there is an abysmal void, with players who are too stereotypical. Alcaraz is today the only one who actually performs many of various things, and I tell me that he and Sinner could have a boulevard ahead of them. If the others do not ask themselves very quickly the proper questions about what to add to their game, we should not then come and say: ‘We were unlucky, we fell at the same moment as them.’”
Alcaraz has won a lot more than Sinner so far. The Spaniard has already won 4 Grand Slam championships, 5 Masters 1000sand has been number 1 in the world for 36 weeks. The Italian – for his part – made a tremendous leap in quality in the second half of last year. Jannik’s ability was previously known to all, but several obstacles had prevented him from expressing it fully.
