Breaking News: Dallas Mavericks lands a versatile top player from a rival team

The now-Mavericks guard helped out his former franchise after leaving the club in the offseason.

All dynasties must come to an end somehow. The Golden State Warriors might have anticipated that it would finish with the big three, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, each departing as members of the franchise, but that didn’t happen. Instead, Thompson is now a member of the Dallas Mavericks, where he’ll be able to strive for a fifth NBA title after the franchise competed in the NBA Finals a season ago.

While it can be perceived as an emotional move given Thompson’s stint in the Bay Area, — resulting in four banners and one of the best dynasties the NBA has ever seen — it could have been best for both parties.

Thompson’s output has fallen, and he wasn’t helping Curry bring the Warriors over the hump to even become a playoff team. While there were no on-court results, the Warriors were footing a huge price to preserve the nucleus of the past dynasty while seeking to complement them on the roster and develop a competitive club.

“What Klay just did—and nobody will give him credit for—is that he just rescued this organization from the financial troubles it was starting to confront. He still did it for the organization, but nobody will acknowledge that. Nobody will claim his leaving was because he was unhappy, and, again, he wasn’t the happiest last year,” Green added.

The five-time All-Star sees a dwindling role with a franchise he previously helped score a 73-win season with. It had to be frustrating, and it makes sense as to why his production and satisfaction fell in recent seasons.

With his departure, the club used the cap space they would have used to sign him to bring on players like De’Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield, and Kyle Anderson. Bringing in many talents, the Warriors are aiming to claw their way back to contention at least one more time during Curry’s storied career.

“He offered cap relief for this organization on his way out. You know what I’m saying? He got some picks given back to the organization on his way out,” Green continued.

For Thompson, he landed a payout in Dallas, where he will join Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in search of a championship. Irving and Thompson have a history of competing for championships against each other — with each contributing vital expertise to a team seeking a second banner.
