Kyrie Irving Undergoes Surgery on Broken Left Hand

Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving had surgery to repair a broken left hand, the team announced Tuesday evening. He sustained the injury during training earlier this month.

Irving expressed his gratitude to his supporters on social media, stating his intention to rest and recover. “Thank you for all the messages and prayers. GOD truly knew that I needed to take a break from Basketball after the long season and give myself some time to heal,” he wrote. “I love improving my craft, but now I must rest and recover.”

The Mavericks did not provide further details about the severity of the injury. According to the Mayo Clinic, complete healing from hand surgery can take several months or longer.

With NBA training camp starting in late September or early October and the regular season beginning around Halloween, Irving has roughly two to three months to recover if his rehabilitation goes smoothly.

Last season, Irving was instrumental in leading the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance since the 2010-11 season, averaging 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals in 40.0 minutes across all 22 of Dallas’ postseason games.

The Mavericks will provide further updates on Irving’s status as necessary.
