Rafael Nadal’s uncle names ‘new rivalry’

Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni Nadal, believes Novak Djokovic is no longer a threat to Carlos Alcaraz. Following Alcaraz’s Wimbledon triumph over Djokovic, Toni Nadal suggests that only Jannik Sinner can now match Alcaraz’s level. Alcaraz won his second straight Wimbledon title without dropping a set, outperforming Djokovic in every aspect.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, has yet to win a title this year and struggled to counter Alcaraz’s game. Toni Nadal wrote in his El Pais column that Djokovic couldn’t handle Alcaraz’s tempo and relied on luck that didn’t materialize. He noted that Djokovic’s tactics—playing aggressively and trying to shorten exchanges—were ineffective against Alcaraz.

Toni Nadal argued that Djokovic’s only option was to slow down the game and hope Alcaraz wasn’t at his best. He believes that trying to outpace Alcaraz is nearly impossible and that Sinner is the only player capable of challenging the young Spaniard. Nadal sees a budding rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, predicting it will dominate tennis in the coming years.

Sinner, who overtook Djokovic in the ATP rankings earlier this year, won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open by defeating Daniil Medvedev, with Alcaraz losing in the quarter-finals. Matches between Alcaraz and Sinner have been competitive, with Alcaraz winning five of their nine encounters. Their rivalry is expected to shape the future of tennis.
