Bruins Should Sign Former First-Round Pick
With this former top prospect, the Bruins have an intriguing alternative if they’d like more forward depth.
It makes sense for the Boston Bruins to bring on one extra forward before the 2024–25 campaign officially begins. Even though the majority of this year’s top free agents have signed contracts, there are some respectable depth possibilities that might be worth a shot.
Alex Nylander seems like a good addition among the players whose names are still available on the free-agent market.
The Buffalo Sabres selected Nylander, 26, eighth overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-1 winger, who was once thought to be a top prospect, has never been able to develop into the top-six forward that many had predicted. Despite this, he has demonstrated that he is a capable depth forward who can contribute more secondary scoring when available.
After being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets by the Pittsburgh Penguins during the previous season, Nylander performed admirably. He has 11 goals and 15 points in 23 games for the Blue Jackets. Remarkably, despite Nylander’s impressive showing, the Blue Jackets decided not to extend a qualifying offer to him.
Despite the tiny sample size, the Bruins should take note of Nylander’s performance with the Blue Jackets. Signing Nylander would give them a little more competition at training camp, which would not hurt. If you can find an inexpensive one-year deal, this would be a good option to consider.
