Jannik Sinner: “I don’t see my parents so often

Jannik Sinner: “I don’t see my parents so often, unfortunately, but when I see them, it’s always great time.”

Jannik Sinner disclosed after winning the Australian Open 2024 that he moved out of his parents’ house when he was just 14 years old in order to pursue tennis greatness.

On Sunday, January 28, Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the Australian Open 2024 final to win his first Grand Slam. Medvedev, who won the first two sets easily, made him dig deep.

But the Italian never lost his composure and pulled off an incredible comeback in the third set, winning 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and 6-3 to win his maiden Grand Slam trophy.

Jannik Sinner mentioned the roles that his father Johann and mother Siglinde played in his tennis career during his winner’s speech at the Rod Laver Arena. He was later pressed to elaborate on his relationship with his parents at the news conference held after the game. He answered,

“I’ve never faced a crowd that loud before or after,” says Serena Williams, one of the French fans who backed Julie Halard-Decugis prior to her first WTA championship.

“When I was fourteen years old, I left home. I had to mature quickly as a result, learning how to cook and do my own washing. In one sense, it is different the first time, but in another, it was maybe the quickest way to mature. It was difficult for me, I believe, but it’s equally difficult for the parents to part from their 14-year-old kid.”

He gave his parents credit for molding his composed demeanor.

Maybe the main reason I’m here now is because they never placed pressure on me—they always gave to me. I’m a laid-back guy who merely enjoys playing tennis. Being twenty-two, I also enjoy doing everyday activities. They really are the ideal parents; that much is clear. I only know them, of course, but they’re fantastic.”

Jannik Sinner’s mother, Siglinde is an attendant at the same ski lodge in Sexten, Italy, where his father Johann works as a cook.

Sinner revealed to the media at the Australian Open 2024 press conference that he hasn’t been able to spend as much time as he would like with his parents.

“I don’t see them so often, unfortunately, but when I see them it’s always great time,” said the 22-year-old.

In order to improve as a tennis player, he also shared his brother Marc’s candid criticism.

“Also my brother, he brings me honesty throughout the whole career I’m going through,” said Jannik Sinner.
