Iga Swiatek has committed to playing the Olympics and isn’t bothered about the surface change
Iga Swiatek has stated why she won’t be missing the Olympic Games like some of her rivals.
Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur have already announced their decision to forgo the Games in Paris this summer, citing the hard transfer from clay to grass and back to clay.
But world No. 1 Swiatek believes the surface changes aren’t a concern, adding that a couple of days is ample time to adjust to the clay.
The tennis event at the Olympics kicks underway at the end of July. While some players are anxious to win home a medal for their nation, plenty have already ruled themselves out totally.
Raducanu was one of the first top WTA talents to refuse the chance to compete at the Olympic Games, and top 10 players Sabalenka and Jabeur shortly followed with their own comments about boycotting Paris 2024. But world No. 1 Swiatek has already committed, despite the rapid turnaround after Wimbledon.
Asked how she would prepare for Wimbledon knowing that the Olympics were being played right after, the 23-year-old told Przeglad Sportowy: “I want to be successful wherever I play, you know? We do not underestimate any tournament, especially a Grand Slam. But I understand that I haven’t truly discovered my talent on grass yet. So I’ll concentrate on work. Generally, the preparations will not be any different owing to the Olympics.”
