LSU Football lands it’s first highly rated defensive tackle in Spring transfer , Jay’Viar Suggs
The LSU Tigers have finally added their first incoming transfer, almost a month after the NCAA’s Spring Transfer Portal window started. Jay’Viar Suggs, a defensive tackle from Grand Valley State, has pledged to Brian Kelly and the LSU football team, adding much-needed depth to the defensive tackle group. Suggs, who still has two years left of eligibility, joins the LSU football team.
Suggs demonstrated a strong pass rush ability with three sacks in 2022 and 21 tackles, five sacks, and four pass breakups for Grand Valley State in 2023. Suggs was probably signed because of Brian Kelly’s Grand Valley State connections, as Kelly coached the Lakers from 1991 to 2003. Kenzel Kelly, Kelly’s son, was a teammate of Suggs at Grand Valley State.
After Suggs listed USC, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida State, and Kentucky as their final six, the Tigers emerged victorious in this late contest and were offered a scholarship. The team swung and failed on multiple defensive tackle targets after Brian Kelly declared the team wasn’t in the market to “buy players,” so landing Suggs was a huge move.
Suggs and Jacobian Guillory will now start as the defense’s two starting defensive tackles. The Tigers might not be done shopping, however, since on Mother’s Day they welcomed defensive tackle Brandon Lane, a transfer from Stephen F. Austin, for an unofficial visit. The Tigers are also interested in former Tennessee players Tyler Baron and Wesley Walker.
Bo Davis needs to perform his magic now.
Bo Davis was brought in by the LSU football team this off-season because of his track record of player development and recruitment. This summer, Bo Davis will prioritize the development of defensive tackles. Both Dominick McKinley, an incoming freshman, and Jay’Viar Suggs will require an accelerated path from Davis and are expected to improve as the season progresses. Once again, a position that was a major worry might become a strength if Davis can bring the two up to speed.
